Summer Fishing Challenge kicks off for kids under 15 – Castlegar News
Keep a fishing journal for a chance to win prizes from the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC this summer.
Young people 15 and under can participate by sharing their fishing moments this summer, the first 1,000 who log at least five fishing trips are eligible to win a fishing tackle kit. Young people who catch a fish on each of the five different fishing trips can also enter to win a Blue Fox fishing rod and a Luhr Jensen reel. The Rod and Reel Prize will be awarded to each of the first 200 eligible submissions.
“We had an enthusiastic turnout across the province last year with youth from Terrace, Fort St. John, Campbell River to Creston and everywhere in between,” says Jessica Yarwood, Freshwater Outreach Coordinator. Fisheries Society, in a press release.
“We are seeing indications that interest in the sport will continue to grow this year as more families discover it as a way to spend time together outdoors. It’s perfect for multigenerational families and what could be better than a British Columbia lake in the summer? “
In 2020, license sales to residents of British Columbia increased 17% from 2019, with the largest increase seen among 16 to 24 year olds (67%) and 25 to 34 year olds (29%) . The youngest participants in the challenge were three years old and the average age of the participants was 8.5 years old.
To participate, complete the Fishing Log or Online Log by recording each fishing trip and taking a photo during that trip. Photos can be landscapes of a lake or river, of people fishing, or of that day’s catch. Photos may relate to multiple trips to the same location or to different locations. Participants must also correctly answer a skill-testing question.

Entries must be submitted between May 21 and August 3, 2021.
