Portage County Golf News and Ratings for June 26
Many golf fans are still sad that the PGA is now hosting the PGA Senior Championship at the Firestone Country Club, which ends today, instead of the WGC event which was a staple of the PGA Tour regular schedule.
However, this year’s senior event was just that: a six-day festival with plenty of events surrounding senior PGA golfers that included something for everyone.
Golfers could watch, and amateurs even compete in the Pro-Am, the practice round, four days of exceptional professional golf, concerts and opportunities for juniors.
The Senior PGA started, not on the golf course, but at Hoban High School for an exceptional concert presented by the Wentz Family Foundation of Hudson.
The event featured country star Jake Owen as well as his friend and golfer John Daly, who joined Owen on stage.
All proceeds from concert tickets were donated to local organizations
Junior golfers from Northeast Ohio’s PGA Junior Leagues have been invited to the inaugural Firestone Junior Cup. Eight teams faced off on Firestone’s Fazio course, with the team representing Akron’s first tee winning.
With the championship wrapping up today and a concert by the Akron Symphony Orchestra to close the night, the PGA Senior Championship has truly demonstrated that golf is a family sport.
The Ohio Open
The Ohio Open, presented by the Northern Ohio PGA, this week celebrates 100 years of exceptional golf as professionals and amateurs compete at the newly refurbished Westfield Country Club Tuesday through Thursday.
Local golfers include Mitch Camp, Alan Keshock, Tyler McHugh and Russel Papa from Aurora; Alex Moran of Kent; Nathan Tarter from Mogadore; Jake Kruegel and Justin Long from Ravenna, and Randy Dietz and Darin Hudak from Tallmadge.
The tee times for the first round start at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
Isabella Mineo, 2021 Kent Roosevelt graduate, receiving the Elizabeth Pfeiffer Kloskoski Pride and Tradition Golf Scholarship following the Dick Pfeiffer Golf Tournament.
The Pfeiffer Scramble included a team of 33 teams as well as generous sponsors and donors.
The junior golfers competed at Mill Creek in the PGA North Ohio junior 18-hole series with Madolyn Kost of Kent winning the 11-15 girls’ division.
Kost shot a solid round of 5 over par, including an eagle on the ninth hole of par 5.
Aurora’s Brooklyn Millard won second place in the 16-19 girls’ division, shooting a round of 7 over par 77.
Devon Carpenter of the Field women’s team and Mineo climbed to 13th and 14th, respectively.
The state of golf
Golf did not seem to have a bright future a few years ago. Golf courses were closing, high schools struggled to field teams, and tee times were available simply by driving to the golf course.
Golf has seen a resurgence in Northeast Ohio.
Tournament directors report tournaments closed well in advance of actual deadlines, youth tournaments, junior events and clinics are full.
The Olde Dutch Mill Golf Course has a junior league which teaches golf to 40 juniors on Sunday evenings as a parent caddy or leads their young golfers for nine holes and instruction.
Windmill Lakes Golf Course offers lessons at its new driving range, and 2.5-year-olds are already taking lessons at Barrington Golf Club at a Little Bear Clinic.
Golf is the sport we can all play together, regardless of age or even ability. Scrambling and fundraising allow even novice golfers to contribute while having fun.
Adults and young people just need to call local courses or ask their golfing friends for information on clinics, lessons and game lessons for all ages.
On foot or on horseback, golf is a sport for everyone.
A first tournament
Be sure to check the calendar for information on Portage County enthusiasts. If your junior golfer hasn’t experienced a tournament, the Children’s Tournament at Sunny Hill on July 18 is designed to be a first event for many youngsters. Local coaches are on the golf course, high school golfers help junior golfers with both the rules and the caddy and parents are encouraged to walk and cheer on their younger golfers.
