Alex Nicholson wants UFC contract after Ricco Rodriguez fight at CamSoda Legends
Alex Nicholson (10-5) has largely made a successful comeback since leaving the UFC in mid-2017. He set up three knockouts in the first round Demoreo Dennis, Chris Barnett and Daniel Madrid.
Nicholson was told he would get the UFC call if he beat Ryan spann for the LFA light heavyweight title. He passed out at the end of the first round after dominating Spann and still finished. Now “The Spartan” is hoping UFC will take him back if he beats former UFC heavyweight champion Ricco Rodriguez at CamSoda Captions this Thursday.
“When [the UFC call] comes, that will be awesome, ”said Nicholson Mmaucka. “I was definitely on the right track. I have beaten guys with good records. It only speaks for itself. It’s not like I’m fighting scrubs and hitting my record. I fought the toughest people I could find.
He will have his hands full with Rodriguez, who has said he has been in the best shape for years. But Nicholson relishes the challenge.
“He’s a legend in the sport,” Nicholson said. “I can’t wait to show off everything I’ve worked on. “
“I have never lost heavy weight.”
Prior to his release, Nicholson had spent time in the light heavyweight and light heavyweight divisions of the UFC. But on his return, he would like to try the heavyweights.
“I weigh around 220 pounds,” he said. “I can fight anyone in the world in this heavyweight class without having to give up any weight. I have never lost heavy weight. Through trial and error, you find out what works for you.
Nicholson is set to return to light heavyweight, but insisted he would never make it to middleweight again.
Whether he is signed immediately to the UFC or that he has to compete in the next Dana White Tuesday Night Contender Series, Nicholson is motivated by the light at the end of the tunnel on his return trail. But now he is also fighting for something else. More like someone else. Her nine month old son, Odin.
“It definitely kept me focused,” said Nicholson. “There is nothing more important than family in this world. I’m doing it for him now.
Nicholson predicted he would clinch the knockout over Rodriguez when the two clash.
